It Doesn't Not Work V:
The Alternative Surf Craft Show
SUBMISSIONS OPEN

May 4th, 2018- Brooklyn, NY: CALLING ALL SURF CRAFT SHAPERS! The fifth annual It Doesn’t Not Work surfboard show’s call for submissions is now officially open! Bring out your most creative and boldest designs. The It Doesn’t Not Work Surfboard show is moving dates and location for 2018. The fifth installment of IDNW will take place September 14th-16th at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club in Rockaway Beach. After four years at Picture Farm Gallery, SMASH Productions & Picture Farm Productions are expanding the show to offer new opportunities for shapers and attendees to experience the craft of surfboard shaping. Live shaping demos and close proximity to the beach will allow participants to truly test out some of the creations.

It Doesn’t Not Work will be a weekend pop-up event filled with conversation, mind expansion, film screenings, prizes, and beer! The process of surf craft design is not one limited to the big machines of the surf industry, or solely belonging to the heralded masters of the craft, it is a living folk art on an equally democratic level. Join us in the continually evolving conversation between local craftsman and the sea… and the creations that relationship spawns.

Send us your designs: Submit your wildest and most experimental boards, alaias, handplanes, paipos and as-yet-to-be-named experiments for display. Extra points if you've built more than one, have revised the design and can show the evolution!

TWO MOONS : A NEW YORK SURF PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

If you've spent any time surfing in the greater New York metropolitan urban center area you should acquaint yourself with two of the more luminous characters in the scene. Often quiet in their own ways their relationship with New York surfing is long and celebrated. Mike Nelson and Matt Clark are fixtures in the New York Surf scene, documenting almost every swell between the two of them since 1990. Add to that the that both have recently bagged SURFER Magazine covers and the opportunity presents itself to witness the work of two surf photographers in the hard earned flow of observation and perspective.

Matthew Clark (b. 1983) is an American photographer born and raised in New York. Clark's work explores his relationship with the ocean through intimate portraits of breaking surf with the intention of capturing something private, personal, and unique about each wave. His photographs are the delicate, yet powerful, and capture elements of moving water and reflections of light in churning surf. The ability to capture these moments come from his expertise in water from a lifetime of surfing in New York and experience in the cold Atlantic water. His work was recently featured as the first ever image of a New York wave on the cover of Surfer Magazine and was awarded the 2nd Annual Follow the Light Foundation Grant in 2007 by Surfing Magazine.

Mike Nelson is a self taught photographer that has been capturing images of the surfing world for the past 20 years. Mike’s photographs have been featured in some of the largest editorial and advertising campaigns across the globe. Mike also co-owns and operates , a fixture in the Long Beach scene and can be found almost patiently waiting for the next major swell just like any shop grom.

Two Moons highlights the two contrasting styles of both Matt Clark and Mike Nelson. They can both be shooting the same swell, at the same surf spot with the same surfers and will come up with completely different results and points of view. Few photographers have as great of access as Matt and Mike do to some of the best surfers and surf spots in the New York/New Jersey surf world.

The Two Moons’ will enjoy an opening reception on Friday April 21, 2017 at Picture Farm Gallery in Brooklyn.

Thanks to interest coming from shapers in places-other-than-here, we have initiated a whole new part of the IDNW exhibition. More or less it's a phone-in. Or send-in, if you will. Shapers who could not possibly imagine getting the time off work and the scratch together to fly or drive or bus to New York, finding a place to sleep to boot... you now have an outlet for your pent up creativity (when it comes to us anyhow.)

Please submit your design as clean, hi-resolution photos and measurements and anecdotes. (We'll be contacting you to get more infos, don't worry if you don't know exactly what to say.)

If we get enough entrants into the FAR FLUNG EXPERIMENTS category, we will be creating an exhibition space of photos and writings that come from all over the globe.

We are proud of our evolving IDNW poster graphics. From the original one taped together in a hurry, to Antonio Sanchez' hand drawn GiF to last year's send up of an Experimental Jetset classic. This year's logo is a special treat, paying homage to the great Rick Griffin. 5 Summer Stories is never really too far from our minds and it seemed like a pretty good idea. IDNW sits down and asks the artist about getting conned into helping us out. Señor ...

Where did you learn to draw? What started you on this career?

I've always been drawing since I was a kid so I don´t remember a moment when I said "OK, time to make a living of this". Probably the starting point was when I finished school and studied Cartoon Animation. It was before the computer animation times, everything was drawn by hand and you had to calculate timing, movements and mood of every second of animation. It was beautiful but also very repetitive so I studied Illustration and Graphic Design and that´s when I started working as an illustrator.

How did you get roped into making a poster for a surfboard design symposium to be held in Brooklyn?

I got an email from my friend Toddy from Picture Farm with the subject "Surf Style", asking me if I would feel comfortable drawing a poster for a surfboard symposium. The subject itself just got me excited and my reply was "Yes, of course". We've been working together for more than five years and I always enjoy all the commissions he sends me, but honestly this one was the most exciting.

What did you think of the idea when it was presented to you?

I wasn't sure about what he was looking for because I am not a big expert on surf illustration. He sent me the "Five Summer Stories" poster as a reference and my first thought was "uhm... this is not what I do at all!". After many conversations, sketches and emails we saw that the best option was making an obvious homage to the poster, trying to get the feeling of Rick Griffin´s work but with my own style very present. And I think it works pretty well, I like it a lot.

The reference was pretty specific… did you know Rick Griffin’s work before?

Not really. Well, at least didn't know that it was him. I saw his work before but didn't know about him. After all the research I made for this work I have to admit that I am a big fan now!

You recently published a children’s book right? What is it about?

It´s called "" ("The incredibly amazing story of Marcial, the normal kid") and it´s been released in Spain in Spanish, Basque and Catalán. It tells the story of Marcial, a pretty normal kid, and his dog Trismo. His life is super normal until the day he finds out that he is fantastic, amazing and incredibly normal.

I didn't want to tell the kids a story about three little bunnies that have a birthday party in the forest. I wanted to make them think, and I hope I got it. Some reviews say that it´s a great book not only for kids but for adults, and I think that´s the best thing you can say about a children´s book. It´s coming out in the USA this year but until then you can get it on Amazon.

And, of course… have you ever surfed?

Haha! NEVER!! But I would LOVE to! Actually I spend summers in a family house in Tapia de Casariego, a small town in the north coast of Spain where one of the Surf World Cup events take place and I always think about getting some lessons... but never happened yet.

Hello all who participated or helped out with this years It Doesn't Not Work!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for making this years IDNW show an incredible success! An event is only as good as those who participate in it. This year was an incredible crop of shapers and we were honored and stoked to have you participate in the show. There is something wonderful about bringing like minded people together. I hope all of you keep in touch with each other and to see future collaborations and ideas being shared.

I want to just thank all of those who worked behind the scenes to make this event possible.

I first want to acknowledge Andreea Waters for the incredible photo show on Friday and her bottomless well of enthusiasm. These events are always better when you are around.

Thank you Johnny Knapp for contacting all the shapers and putting together an incredible catalog of interviews with all these great shapers. Your questions and insight were immensely helpful and thank you for all your hard work.

David Yun and Zak Klauck for designing the It Doesn't Not Work Zine/Catalog. We are extremely fortunate to have your skills and talent involved in our little event. You guys did an amazing job and I can't wait to hang this years zine up on the wall! Epic!

(An addendum from Toddy: I think I should say that I don't think the boards in the show are shitty. I think I say that a few times in the interview. But I was hopped up on caffeine see, and I was thinking more along the lines to a preponderance of non "high performance" standard shapes. And that's the special sauce. The weird stuff. The "shitty" stuff. And then of course I watch all these boards march through the door this year and I remember how incredible the craftsmanship is on the boards. Just over the top. And I think to myself "hmmm probably shouldn't have called those boards shitty. Someone isn't gonna get my perticular vocabulary...")

Pushing The Outer Limits of Pure Surf Design

& is pleased to announce the run of show for It Doesn’t Not Work III: Pushing The Outer Limits of Pure Surf Design. The Exhibit will kick off Saturday, May 13th, 4PM at Picture Farm Gallery (338 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn, NY). Local surfboard shapers, hobbyists, creative individuals and such will be on hand displaying their latest creations & oddities. The general public will have the opportunity to engage all these surfboard designers on their concepts and gain insight into the creative process of shaping surfboards.

It Doesn’t Not Work is a surf craft design event that explores the process of the art & craft of surf-riding design and a presentation of experimental shapes, work-in-progress projects and tried-and-true formulas.

In addition to the surfboard exhibit, It Doesn’t Not Work will run in conjunction with the NY Fish Fry (swell permitting) and will allow surfers and shapers to give these experimental designs a test ride. The NY Fish Fry will take place at Grand street, Long Beach, NY during the weekend of IDNW, May 14-15th, 2016. The Call will be made for which day the Fish Fry will run by Thursday May 12th. The NY Fish Fry has become a staple in NY surf culture over the last 6 years. It’s a great time. Completely grass roots, no tents, no sponsors, no commercialism at all. Just a great opportunity for friends and like minded surfers to come together and try out new and old boards. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Follow dedicated wave hunters to the end of the A-train and beyond and peek into this passionate way of life through authentic photography and several surfers personal journeys. Discover what it takes to brave the cold Atlantic Ocean and get a fresh insight on the Big Apple s hidden surf subculture. An adventurous photographer has developed relationships with local surfers, absorbed scarcely available knowledge about the ocean and climate, and placed herself in these elements without reservation. To respect the locals and their underground culture, there is no mention of where the specific action takes place.
